A BRIEF HISTORY

In December 1998, Grouse Hall was founded by J. D. Shank (life member), President; Dr. William Dupree, Vice President; Thomas Ames, Secretary; and seven other charter members: Richard Whelan, Lester Greevy III, Lawrence Lawn, Patrick Sherren, Joseph Reynolds, Raymond Cachara, and James Hollingsworth.

The name Grouse Hall was chosen in honor of the oldest shooting box (club) in Pennsylvania, formed by Linford Lardner in 1746 on a 700 acre William Penn land grant near present day Allentown. Lardner hosted sportsmen from eastern Pennsylvania at his stone clubhouse on the property.

As the local Indians burned off the blueberry flats on a regular basis, the continual new growth provided food and habitat for large numbers of ruffed grouse, resulting in excellent gunning opportunities.

The official logo of Grouse Hall was adapted from a personal crest of Col. Peter Hawker, a British gunner and author of both the flintlock and percussion periods.

By the end of 1999, Grouse Hall’s membership had increased to forty-strong, and in the year 2000, the total had risen to more than one hundred. By December, 2011, the total membership exceeded eighty. With a shoot or event scheduled nine times per year, the future promises a continuing Grouse Hall tradition of fellowship and camaraderie.
